Summary:
ABSTRACT: 2,11-cyclized cembranoids are a family of highly functionalized diterpenoids isolated mainly from Caribbean Sea octocorals. The proposed biosynthetic pathway arose from the 2,11-cyclization of the cembrane ring skeleton and further oxidative cyclizations and methyl migrations to construct the carbon skeleton of asbestinin, briarellin, eunicellin and sarcodictyin type compounds. Sixty nine cembranoids, thirty nine asbestinins, twenty two briarellins, seven sarcodictyins and one eunicellin have been isolated to December 2009 from three Caribbean gorgonian, forty four from Briareum asbestinum, eighteen from Briareum polyanthes and seven from Erithropodium caribbaeorum. An overview of thier biogenetic pathway, structure and biological activity are described in this paper. --
